Today it is a real pleasure to welcome author Larry Hammersley to Gina's World of Good. Not only is Larry a wonderful writer, but he is also a terrific person and the ultimate gentleman! Larry, thank you so much for visiting.
Welcome
to my blog, Larry. What is your newest
book about? My newest book is a science fiction novel
entitled Higher Mission. Widower Joe Cramer is paired with Mona Watson
for dangerous missions in the solar system.
His higher mission is to continue providing funds to care for his
permanently ill daughter, Cindy, who is in a hospital on Mars. Brad Whitherspoon, the solar system’s rich
man, has his own higher mission and that is to mount a first ever trip to
Sirius, a star 8.6 light years away. Cramer
refuses to go but is shanghaied. At sub
light speeds the trip will take years to complete. Will he ever see his daughter again? To complicate things he is falling in love
with Mona who is also going on the voyage.
Where
did you get your inspiration for this novel?
I’ve always liked astronomy and read science fiction as a boy. Also, I like romance especially when the hero
and heroine have conflicting personalities such as Cramer and Mona.
What
kind of research did you do for this book?
I did a lot of reading about the planets, moons and outer space in general to
make the scenes true to life for what we now know about the bodies in our solar
system.
Did
you put real experiences from your research in this story? The only real
experience is a painful one. We had a
daughter who was permanently ill and lived to be fourteen. I’ve written two novels, the other one
unpublished, with a daughter who is ill but she recovers in these novels.
What
intrigues you most about writing these love stories? As I mentioned
above I like to pair a man and woman who have conflicting personalities and
must overcome their barriers to get together.
It makes the union that much better. My romance is always of the sweet
variety.

Excellent new book Larry..... Cheers!
ReplyDeleteSo great to visit with you this week, Larry! Thanks for stopping in to my blog. My goodness, you have written so many interesting books. Do you have a favorite?
ReplyDeleteI've read Higher Mission and highly recommend it. Mr. Hammersley obviously knows a lot about astronomy. He put me right into outer space amid dangerous missions and scuffles with bad guys who try to take the prizes. My heart went out to the hero's ill daughter and I rooted for the hero to get together with the woman he fell for.
ReplyDeleteHi Gail, so wonderful of you to comment - thank you for visiting and supporting Larry's writing!
DeleteThanks for the well wishes, Jonathan. Gail, I'm glad you liked Higher Mission. Gina a special thanks to you for having me. I just got home from church and was pleasantly surprised to have three comments already. Favorite story? That's a tough one but I must speak of four. The short story Lab Partners which features the characters that are in A Change of Heart which I like too as Leroy and Jody are favorite characters. Higher Mission is the other one. They all have something in common: sweet romance and the obstacles the hero and heroine have to overcome. Did I say four? Motorcycle Woman and that is my first story to be written from a woman's POV. Unless I go out on a limb and send that one free it is not available via the publisher since the link has problems.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, Larry. I'm wondering - did you plan to have the characters Leroy and Jody appear in two works of yours? Or did they tell you that was the way it was going to be? :-)
DeleteThanks, Regina, for hosting Larry. As others have stated, Larry Hammersley's books are terrific reads. Love how you can count on "no blush" stories from him. :) Since I'm a SF nut, I've read excerpts from his "Higher Mission" and can tell there's danger and suspense included in the plot too. Way to go, Larry! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting, Miss Mae and showing your support for Larry. I did not realize you were a SF enthusiast - interesting!
DeleteThank you for hosting Larry Hammersly, Regina. I've read several of his sweet romance books, and enjoy the vivid description which pulls you into each scene. I've also been blessed to read parts of "Higher Mission," and must say (in my opinion) Larry does his best work in the Science Fiction department. His knowledge of astronomy coupled with a compelling plot, strong chemistry between the h/h, and rivetting scenes, makes for a story you cannot put down.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear from you, Laurie - thanks for cheering Larry on! I'm with you about his wonderful 'sweets'. Love the title "Higher Mission" - it's so compelling.
DeleteMiss Mae and Laurie: Your wonderful remarks warm my heart. Higher Mission was a labor of love, no pun intended. It sprang from a short story and that "short" became the first chapter of the novel with some revising. By the way, the cover shows Cramer holding a blaster but he doesn't handle weapons in the story. My editor said that was okay because it shows Cramer runs headlong into situations despite the dangers. It is a way of symbolically showing Cramer's character. The closest he comes to handling a blaster is when he kicks it out of the hand of a bad guy.

DeleteYes! I remember that scene. It was awesome!
Wonderful interview, Larry, and congrats on the book!
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting, Dani -- always appreciate your support and interest! :-)
DeleteI've read Higher Mission and Larry's detailed descriptions of all things related to astronomy is right on. I enjoyed the push and pull between the hero and heroine and loved the hero's dedication to his daughter. Nice interview guys.
ReplyDeleteHi Darcy, so nice of you to comment and support Larry's wonderful writing. Thanks for visiting!
DeleteLarry,
ReplyDeleteI read your story, Lab Partners, and I loved it! I read another one but can't remember the title - I'm terrible at remembering titles. LOL You are a terrific writer and congratulations on the new release! Btw, you have eye-catching covers!
Hi Diane and thanks for visiting and showing Larry your support. Great point about his awesome covers - they make you want to know more about his stories!
DeleteDanielle thank you for coming by. Higher Mission was actually released in October of 2013. I've had a long dry spell in publications. Plenty of rejections since then. I have another SF novel ready to go but have not found a home for it yet. Darcy, thank you for reading Higher Mission and thank you for the comments on the story. It was an expansion of an old short story which finally became the first chapter and revised. Diane I'm glad you read Lab Partners. That was my first acceptance at Wild Rose and perhaps my favorite short story. I really liked the characters Leroy and Jody so I gave them their own novel cast in modern times. Thanks so much for your kind remarks on my writing.
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie: Yes, that scene was the only fight scene in the whole book. Cramer didn't appreciate Steel accusing him of being a wimp when it came to pain. Mona was sorry she underestimated Cramer on that occasion.
ReplyDeleteLarry and all friends who stopped by and commented this week - what a wonderful time! It was great to have us all join together and celebrate our talented colleague Larry. Being a writer is such a joy, and one of the most rewarding aspects is meeting kindred spirits such as yourselves who truly are friends. Thank you and special blessings to everyone! Visit again soon :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gina and all who commented. It is most appreciated to have such wonderful supporters.
